ARITA PORCELAIN
Arita, a small town in southwest Japan, came to prominence in the early 17th century for the high quality of their porcelain artistry. Today, Arita porcelain is still highly prized worldwide, and many porcelain makers continue to thrive in the town of just 20,000 people, thanks to its long tradition of craftsmanship, the rich variety of its products, and to the uniquely Japanese sensibility that they embody. Presage Arita porcelain is created with exceptional strength and a long-lasting finish due to a unique partnership between master craftsmen and Seiko’s engineers. Each dial is individually molded, fired, and painted by Hiroyuki Hashiguchi in a difficult multi-stage process resulting in a one-of-a kind work of art that is nearly 4 times stronger than normal porcelain while employing a deep luster and soft shading that gives each timepiece a singularly elegant appearance.
ENAMEL
With its brilliance and depth, fine enamel work transforms Presage dials into rich backgrounds for timekeeping artistry. Seiko’s first wristwatch, the Laurel, included a pristine enamel dial, its depth and beauty lauded for its long-lasting finish. As with the 1913 original, today’s Presage enamel dials are created through a painstaking, multi-stage process-each one a unique work of art. Every dial goes through a rigorous process created by craftsman Mitsuru Yokozawa and his team of experts in Japan. The glaze is carefully applied at an even thickness and fired in a kiln at a specifically calibrated temperature, causing the glass compounds in the glaze to melt and develop the enamel’s characteristic soft and beautiful texture. Each dial is then meticulously inspected to ensure the enamel is uniform and smooth, resulting in a long lasting finish that will last a lifetime.
URUSHI LACQUER
Kanazawa lacquerware began in the early Edo period (1603-1867), when renowned artists were invited to develop a unique lacquer craft that blended graceful aristocratic aesthetic with powerful samurai culture. Today, craftsman Mr. Isshu Tamura Each creates each piece of Urushi lacquerware through a painstaking process of coating and polishing in alternate phases to realize depth of color and ideal smoothness. He identifies subtle scratches imperceptible to the human eye by using sound and touch, meticulously polishing them to ensure that each piece is free of visible blemishes. The partnership between Seiko and master artisans craft Presage Urushi Lacquer dials as unique works of art that honor the past, fit the needs of the present, and are destined to be valued long into the future.
